0 New Disorder Festival 2012 Part 1 – Cack Blabbath

A quest for food and chatting to various folk outside meant that I missed most of Fahran, but there was no way I was going to miss the next band on. Captain Horizon played one of our CackBlabbath Presents shows in Birmingham earlier in the year, and on the strength of that performance (and on the insistence of the rest of the CackBlabbath team) they will be joining us in Wakefield next Feb for Twitrfest III, but this was my first chance to see them in the flesh..

Captain Horizon have built a reputation as one of the best unsigned bands in the UK, and from the moment they took to the stage it was obvious that the reputation is well deserved. Lead by the irrepressible Whitty (resplendent in his Dakesis t-shirt) CH pack in an unbridled bouncy energy that few can match. I’m sure Whitty spent as much time in the crowd as on the stage, seriously, this guy is one of the best frontmen you will ever see.

Peace Love and Bananas indeed.

Sometimes you see a band (sometimes several times!) and you just have to wonder how they are not so much more successful than they are. captainHorizon are one such band. Steve ‘Whitty’ Whittington – as well as having a fine voice – is a born entertainer. Whether he’s leaping and dancing about the stage, on the floor amongst the punters, or hanging from the gantry by his fingertips, he pours every ounce of his soul into every song. Bassist Alex Thompson shares Whittys wanderlust, making regular forays around the room leaving guitarist Josh Watson to hold the fort. captainHorizon defy pigeon-holing; all you need to know is that if you like it hard, heavy, melodic, and delivered with passion and genuine belief, look no further.

I’ve lost count the amount of times people have said to me “why arn’t these guys signed?” or “these guys should be huge”, I’m referring of course to the band that kicked off the second half, Captain Horizon. Unique, talented, entertaining, spell binding are all words that are used to describe the Birmingham based outfit. A blend of rock, indie, prog all go into the mix with these guys and you end up with powerful emotive songs like Patch and Torn Up My World, what a way to kick off part 2!
